A CHURCH I WILL ALWAYS
REMEMBER
The summer of my
senior year in High School our church youth choir took the musical Godspell
on tour. There were about forty of
us—the ten cast members who were mostly seniors, the background chorus, and
me, the guy who would have loved to be one of the ten cast members, since
all of the other seniors were in it, but who ended up being the piano
player. [Sigh]
We stopped first
in Monroe, Louisiana—nothing too memorable there--and then at
a small church in Malvern,
Arkansas, where several persons, righteously
indignant that Jesus should be portrayed in clown make-up, walked out on
our performance. We next stayed at a
large church in downtown Nashville, sleeping on the floor of their
gymnasium, but I do not remember anything else about that church or the
people in it. We stopped at some
other places to, but I do not remember them at all.
Making our way
back home we stopped at a small church in northern Alabama that was made up of mostly elderly
persons. We were the visiting choir
for their Sunday morning service and did not perform, just sang a couple of
anthems. Afterwards we had a
covered-dish lunch I will never forget.
It was lavish to an extent I had not experienced before. Maybe it was what they did every Sunday,
but if it was, they sure had an eye toward what youth would like to
eat. We ate seconds and thirds, and
I remember more than one of my fellow youth being impressed and commenting
on the gracious hospitality provided by this congregation who had no
connection with us other than a faith in Jesus.
True hospitality
makes an impression! Tonight, in
addition to having the opportunity to be hospitable to our own youth by
attending their Mission Dinner, we will have our guests from the Democratic Republic of the Congo joining us. And again, on Friday noon, they will have lunch (a covered-dish)
here at the church with us. My hope
is that as many of you as can will come, bring that dish that only you can
cook so well, and enjoy a good time of food and fellowship with these
friends from a long way away, and that many years from now when they think
back on their journey of faith and how God’s grace has sustained them all
along the way, they will remember us and our hospitality, and give thanks
for the goodness of God!

UPCOMING EVENTS
Thank God for Sunday School
As
John and Scott sang to us on Sunday, we are so thankful for children’s
Sunday School! Please help us give
our children’s Sunday School teachers some time off. We need volunteers that are willing to
teach either the younger elementary or older elementary students for one or
two Sundays this summer. Curriculum
containing rich Bible stories with a variety of activities is
provided. Treat yourself to an hour
with our wonderful children! Please
call Donna
Edwards at
817-354-4149, if you will be able to help us. Thank you!
“Fiddler on the Roof”
Tim
Jarrell, Pastor of Couts Methodist Church, would like to personally invite
you to attend the performance of “Fiddler on the Roof” on Thursday-Sunday
evenings @ 7:30 pm on May 8-11. There will be no charge for these
performances; however a love offering will be collected at intermission to
help offset the costs. If you would
like for us to reserve space, please call the week of the show and we’ll be
glad to reserve a row or whatever for you.
